Memory, Poetry, Makerspace with Jared Morningstar
Writing poetry or micro-fiction can help us process important life-cycle events, whether they be celebratory and traumatic events. In this two-part workshop, Jared Morningstar will lead us to write about a personal memory that revolves around an important life event. We might think about recent unions or divorces; births and deaths; or moments we have overcome hurdles and reached goals. We will then create handmade paper that embodies these memories and onto which we add our original writing.
Lunch will be provided at both workshops, and all participants will receive a Roethke tote or a hardcover blank journal. The workshops are free and open to the public. Space is limited, so please pre-register (scroll down for registration button).
NOV 9, Sat, at the Roethke House:
10am - 12pm: We will brainstorm and identify the event we want to work with, and then we will generate original creative writing around this event.
12pm - 1pm: Lunch will be provided for participants who wish to stay and continue writing.
NOV 16, Sat, at the Roethke and Stone Houses:
Before the workshop: Gather a couple of paper artifacts related to our memory poem. These might be documents, copies, printouts of relevant images or words, or original drafts of the poem.
10am to 11:30am: We will discuss and finalize our poems with Jared.
11:30am to 12pm: Lunch
12pm to 3pm: We will make handmade paper that physically embodies our memory using the artifacts we brought from home. Then we will inscribe our original poem onto it.
3pm to 4:30pm: Wrap-up, including sharing final work and photographing it for the website.
The Roethke House will be open throughout the week for additional, optional writing time. These times will be distributed at the first workshop on Nov 9.
Participants will be invited to share their final products on friendsofroethke.org.
