Four Temperaments Workshop Series
About the workshop series
Gregory Orr says we are each born with a natural inclination to write in one of four temperaments, which he identifies as Story, Structure, Music, and Imagination. In this seven-session workshop we will examine which of these temperaments come most naturally as your style and experiment with techniques to deepen, as well as vary and broaden that instinctive style.
Open to all poets who want to explore new approaches to developing their natural skills and writers in other genres who wish to give poetry a try.
About the sessions
Sessions are led by three instructors and held on Thursdays via Zoom from 7:00–8:30 p.m. EST.
February 29, Session I: This session will offer a general introduction to the workshop and one another as well as a craft talk to understand Orr’s framework with breakout groups examining example poems. Led by Anita Skeen Carol V. Davis, and Marion Starling Boyer.
March 7 Session II: Led by Anita Skeen, this session provides a deep dive into the Story Temperament with example poems and generative prompts.
March 14, Session III: Led by Carol V. Davis, this session examines the Music Temperament with example poems and generative writing prompts.
March 21, Session IV: Led by Marion Boyer, this session will cover the Structure Temperament with example poems and generative writing prompts.
March 28, Session V: Led by Carol V. Davis will offer example poems and prompts for the Imagination Temperament.
April 4, Session VI: Marion Boyer will offer a Baker’s Dozen Recipes for your half-baked poems. Attendees will work in breakout rooms with Anita, Marion, Carol, and Sherrin to experiment applying some of these methods to their poems.
April 11, Session VII: Celebratory reading of poems by all attendees.
