The Stone House gets a new roof
We’ve launched some exciting times! The wait is over! Friends of Theodore Roethke has taken the first step forward to Save the Stone House, the adjacent family residence of the poet’s Uncle Carl.
After two owners of construction companies deemed the Stone House solid and worthy of restoration, we have started with the roof. Hebert Roofing Company completed the new roof over the weekend. Next will be painting the house in colors typical to its historic period. Saving the Stone House will extend Roethke Foundation’s community outreach .
Our original mission includes both houses: the first, a museum with artifacts and furnishings the poet once knew and opportunities to write in a writer’s house; the second house to extend our mission by giving the community a place for student tutoring in reading and writing in a homework club, rooms for visiting writers and artists to stay and teach in local schools, a place to gather to hear speakers and have discussions and a place to hold language and art camps on summer days when we can’t meet outside. And so much more, as the two family homes work together to benefit Saginaw.
Stay tuned and keep watch as you drive by on Gratiot!
